Guidance before choosing a product

Which charging infrastructure is best suited to your location?

Not every e-bike charging station is suitable for every location. The key factors are, above all, the power supply, charging requirements, available space and the intended use. Requirements regarding design and mobility also play a role in the choice of system.

Connected to the grid or self-sufficient?

Grid-connected solutions are suitable for sites with an existing or potentially installable electricity connection. Self-sufficient solar charging stations are particularly suitable when no mains connection is available. When planning, solar irradiance, battery storage and the expected charging demand must be taken into account.

When does a compact solution make sense?

Compact charging stations are suitable for limited spaces, individual parking spaces, underground car parks, shelters or smaller cycle parking areas. Depending on the available power supply, options include, for example, the mains-powered LiON Box S or the fixed, solar-powered LiON Spot.

When is visibility important?

High-profile charging infrastructure is suitable for locations where the charging station is also intended to serve as a service point, an information area or a visible component of the mobility offering. Depending on the product, customised designs and advertising space are available.

Which solution is best suited to mobile operations?

For events, seasonal locations or changing sites, the mobile, ballasted versions of LiON Rack and LiON Tree are ideal. They do not require a mains connection and, provided the site conditions are suitable, can be set up at various locations.

Decision-making guide

Typical selection criteria at a glance

The following overview shows which approaches are suitable for different requirements.

Criterion Typical requirement Possible approach to a solution
Power supply Mains connection available or can be provided Grid-connected charging infrastructure
Power supply No mains connection or self-contained operation required Solar charging station with battery storage
Space requirements Limited space available Compact LiON Box or fixed LiON Spot, depending on the power supply
Visibility Charging infrastructure should complement the brand identity or the design of the location Custom-designed charging station or system with advertising space
Flexibility Temporary, seasonal or changing place of work Mobile version of the LiON Rack or LiON Tree
Intensity of use Many users or high simultaneous charging demand Charging system with a number of charging points tailored to demand

This overview is intended to provide an initial guide. The specific choice of system depends on the technical requirements and the actual charging requirements at the site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Further questions regarding system selection

Three key factors to consider when choosing between different charging systems.

When is a mains-powered e-bike charging point a good idea?

If a power connection is available or can be installed, a mains-connected charging station is a good option. The number of charging points and any potential extensions should be planned on the basis of charging requirements and the existing electrical infrastructure.

When is an off-grid solar charging station a viable option?

Off-grid solutions are suitable for sites without an available grid connection or for projects where an off-grid power supply is required. Which solar charging station is suitable depends on the location, the available solar irradiance, the storage capacity and the expected charging requirements.

What role do charging points and frequency of use play?

The more bicycles that are to be charged at the same time, the more important it is to have a sufficient number of charging points, the available charging capacity and a layout tailored to usage. The average length of stay of users should also be taken into account when assessing demand.

Step 1

Needs Assessment & Goal Setting

Before planning a charging infrastructure, the key parameters should be clear: Who will be charging, how often will charging take place, what are your organisation’s objectives, and what requirements need to be taken into account?

✓ Clarify usage ✓ Assess charging requirements ✓ Define objectives ✓ Take requirements into account

It is precisely this logic that our charging point calculator reflects.
In just a few seconds, you’ll receive an initial, reliable assessment of your location.

The length of stay determines how often a charging point can be used each day.
Location & Technology

The key fundamentals of your planning

A suitable charging infrastructure starts with an analysis of your site. There are three areas you should pay particular attention to.

Location & Use

Where does charging take place and who uses the charging infrastructure?

  • Indoors or outdoors
  • Space and layout
  • Accessibility and user groups

Technology & Energy

What technical facilities does your site offer?

  • Grid connection or off-grid solar solution
  • Power supply and installation requirements
  • Options for future expansion

Safety & Design

What is important for operations and integration at the site?

  • Installation conditions and weather conditions
  • Suitable loading areas and safe access
  • Labelling, visibility and bespoke design
The result

A solid foundation for your further project planning

Once the location, intended use and technical requirements have been clarified, you can select suitable charging systems and plan the next steps for implementation.

From planning to implementation

How your project works with ONgineer

Five steps, from assessing requirements through to selecting suitable charging systems and on to implementation and possible future expansion.

  1. Needs analysis

What requirements should your charging infrastructure meet?

    • Defining user groups
    • Determine the number of charging points required
    • Define project objectives and requirements
    Result

    The basis for needs-based planning

  2. Site assessment

What facilities does your site offer?

    • Check available spaces
    • Analysing route guidance and accessibility
    • Assessing the power supply and site conditions
    Result

    Defined site requirements

  3. System planning

Which charging solution suits your needs?

    • Selecting suitable charging systems
    • Configure charging points and system variants
    • Coordinate additional fittings and design

System selection tailored to the location and requirements

  4. Implementation

How will the planned solution be implemented?

    • Agree on delivery dates and the project schedule
    • Clarify the scope of installation and responsibilities
    • Commissioning coordinate
    • Preparing documentation and handover
    Result

    Co-ordinated processes and responsibilities

  5. Extension

What happens if your charging requirements change?

    • Additional charging points Check as required
    • Include further systems or locations
    • Adapting solutions to changing requirements
    • Check the compatibility of new connector systems
    Result

Expansion options to be taken into account at an early stage

The benefits for you

Structured planning rather than an isolated product selection

A coordinated project process brings together charging requirements, site conditions, system selection and implementation. This provides you with a clear planning framework that also takes into account any potential future expansions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions regarding planning and implementation

From the initial planning stages to potential expansion: Answers to frequently asked questions about your charging infrastructure project.

What information is required for the initial planning stage?

For the initial planning stage, the most important factors are the location, the intended user groups and the expected charging requirements. The available space, the electricity supply and any specific requirements relating to use should also be taken into account.

This information forms the basis for an initial assessment and the selection of suitable charging systems.

How can you work out the required number of charging points?

The number required depends in particular on how many e-bikes are to be charged at the same time, how frequently the charging points are used and how long users stay at the location.

Our charging point calculator on this page will give you an initial guide. For detailed planning, you should also take the site conditions into account.

Is a mains power supply required for installation?

That depends on the charging system chosen. Grid-connected charging stations require a suitable electricity supply. Alternatively, ONgineer offers self-sufficient solar systems with battery storage that operate without a grid connection.

When selecting off-grid solutions, factors such as solar radiation and the expected charging requirements must be taken into account.

How much does it cost to plan and set up an e-bike charging infrastructure?

The project costs depend on the chosen charging system, the number of charging points and the site-specific requirements. In addition, costs may be incurred for the electricity supply, installation and other site-specific services.

Based on your requirements, ONgineer can draw up a bespoke quote for the relevant products and agreed services.

Does ONgineer also provide support with installation and commissioning?

ONgineer supports you with the planning and coordination of your charging infrastructure project. The scope of services to be provided for delivery, installation and commissioning is agreed on a project-by-project basis.

Any necessary electrical installation work must be carried out by a suitably qualified electrician.

Can the charging infrastructure be expanded or adapted at a later date?

Depending on the system chosen and the technical requirements at the site, it is possible to expand the system with additional charging points or further charging stations.

Changes to socket systems or usage requirements may also necessitate subsequent adjustments. If you anticipate an increase in charging demand, potential expansions should be taken into account at the initial planning stage.
